Chris Matti - Potter

about I made my first pot on the wheel when I was 14 years old as a sophomore at Madison West High. I sold a total of 46 pots that year. Over the next 22 years I have sold many more than 46. I have managed to continue on as a Potter since 1994, when I stopped working for the Cambridge potteries. Odd jobs for various smaller potteries and much time spent fixing up my store front in Stoughton for the next 2 years, then off to Maui to help another “Westy”. Maui is where I started making Raku Pottery. We worked together and made successful lines of Raku and stoneware with Hawaiian themes. Nearly 4 years in Maui when Wisconsin called me home.

about2The Peeling Ceiling Pottery has been the name on the front window in Stoughton for 10 years now; Jennifer Darner Wolfe has been invaluable in keeping the storefront as a pottery art studio and gallery. 4 Potter/artist type people including myself occupy my building--working, sometimes harmoniously, growing, and encouraging each other to stick with it.

Clay as a medium has one of the most endless combinations of outcomes available in the art world. Raku, for me culminates this theme. Random, flowing, chaotic, striking, subtle, you name it, its all there, just don’t eat off it. The shapes I create for the Raku process are influenced from combinations of, early American pottery, Mediterranean vessels, and nature.
